Knacks

Sage ●

• Office Hours

When someone approaches you with a problem that you can solve, they gain +1 Enhancement to resolve it themselves if you work them through a solution. If you can’t solve it, you gain the same bonus to all rolls to solve it on your own. These bonuses apply before rolls are made. Spend Momentum to impel a Storyguide Character to come to you with a problem in need of solving.

• As I Have Foreseen

At the beginning of a scene, you may activate this Knack to make a Knack Skill roll. Set this roll aside. You may replace a roll that is made during the scene — either your own, another player’s, or a Storyguide Character’s of equal or lower Tier — with the results of this dice roll.

Liminal ●●●

• The Gate and Key

You may spend a Momentum to open a portal from one location to another as long as it is through a literal portal (a door, window, manhole, etc.) to anywhere else of your choosing, including Terra Incognitae. You must have visited the location you are moving to for the portal to work.

•• Among the Stars

Roll your Knack Skill and spend a Momentum. For a number of turns equal to successes, take on the form of star stuff, adopting the bleak void of space and the pinpricks of light from distant stars. In doing so, you become intangible, but extremely dense. Matter bends around you, allowing you to pass through the smallest of crack or shore up the largest of spaces. Weapon attacks bend away from you, metal wraps around the density of your shape, and attackers find their fists slowed to nothing as they enter your radius. When the effect ends, your body reverts to normal, but the matter you twisted remains as you moved it.

Guardian/Corruptor ●

• Honied Words

Choose a person to be your charge. Spend a Momentum and give them a direction or suggestion. When they act on that direction, they gain +2 Enhancement to do so as long as you are watching. If you have a Bond with the person, you can forgo the cost
• A Bulwark When a friendly character in your range band would suffer an injury condition, you may expend health levels from Heavy Armor you’re wearing to prevent the injury. If all damage is prevented this way, all other effects of the attack are also negated.

Innate Powers

Arcane Calculus Innate Power

When performing analysis, research, or surveying investigation actions, you gain +1 Enhancement. You can ignore up to 1 Complication from such actions that would lead you to misinterpret the information you gain on the action.
Motif
Arcane and esoteric inscriptions and intoning unspeakable words draw the Gods attention and request their blessing.

Epic Strength Innate Power

You have +1 Scale for purposes of lifting, breaking, or carrying large objects. You can use Might in place of Presence for intimidation, seduction, or building Bonds of camaraderie.

Moon Innate Power

You can radiate an aura of moonlight that cuts through darkness out to long range as a reflexive action. Only you and those you designate can perceive this illumination — others do not benefit from it. You may pay 1 Legend to attempt to reveal the true form of any shapeshifters or other transformed characters within the moonlight, rolling Cunning + Legend against the Manipulation + Legend of a character that wishes to conceal the truth.

Stars Innate Power

As long as you are beneath the open sky, you can take a simple action to shift your senses to a God’s eye view, looking down on yourself and your surroundings out to long range from a top-down perspective.

Colour Out of Space (•••••)

This being of indescribable material has taken up residence in the well behind the home of the Lockwoods. It waits there, consuming animals that are unlucky enough to keep close. She has taken to calling it “Sparky” and treating it not unlike the family dog, however only her latent power keeps it from consuming her family and indeed the entire neighborhood.
Role: Protector
Qualities: Flight, Toxic
Flairs: DREAD GAZE, Plague Touch
Primary Pool: (8): Siphon
Secondary Pool: (7): Flight
Desperation Pool: 5
Health: 5

Mi-Go Brain Cylinder (•••)

The cylinder was first discovered in the 1930s, sealed in the cellar of burned out and abandoned mansion in Vermont. It passed through several antique shops, labeled as “A Medical Curiosity”. Anyone with a lick of sense left it alone and went back to antiquing. It sits on the shelf, waiting and whispering.
Purview: Stars, Moon
Knack: Spend 1 Momentum to add one success to rolls involving recalling or earning new information, as the mind within the cylinder whispers thins you could not otherwise know. In addition, you can Spend 1 Momentum to gain one success to rolls involving reaction speed, as the mind cautions you of dangers before you are aware of them.
Flaw: The mind seeks to find other bodies to house itself, and it makes no secret of the fact that its protection and foreknowledge come at a price. This cost is typically to be paid at some future point, and is doubtless consid erably high; if the sentience begins to feel that its price will not be paid, it becomes quite adversarial

The Still House (•••)

From the street, the Lockwood home is perfectly ordinary—a white New England colonial with trimmed hedges and a blue minivan in the drive. Yet the longer one looks, the more reality bends: the rooms multiply, the air thickens, and sound seems to lag behind speech. The attic grows smaller the further you crawl from the hatchway, extending and shrinking for far more distance then the length of the house.

Beneath the basement, behind a lock of alien alloy, lies an Obscene Orrery—a map not of stars, but of moments. It hums with the geometry of Yog-Sothoth, tracking the movement of time as though it were just another planet. The house shelters her family, but it also watches them.

• Sacrificial Altar
Your sanctum includes a place for ritual sacrifices. You can gain legend by completing a Minor Sacrifice one additional time per arc.
• Vault
The difficulty for unwanted visitors to enter or leave Sanctum is increased by 1, at Tier 2 this increases to 2 and at Tier 3 it increases to 3.
• Tools
Your Sanctum counts as a tool towards a certain type of activity. Pick 2 tool tags that apply. You can purchase this multiple times. As a tool, this grants +1 Enhancement towards the purpose for which it was designed.
Obscene Orrery: +2 Enhancement to Occult Research

The Skeleton Key (•)

Tool: Exceptional x2
Enhancement: +3

Forged of an unknown silver-gray metal, this key is never the same shape twice. When pressed to a lock, its teeth soften and writhe, forming delicate tendrils that explore the tumblers until the mechanism yields. It can open any mortal door—and some that were never meant to exist. In moonlight, it whispers softly, as if remembering every threshold it has ever breached.

TEMPORAL SHIFT

Cost: Imbue 1 Awareness
Duration: Indefinite
Subject: Self
Action: Reflexive
For as long as you have Awareness imbued, you can slow down or speed up time for yourself. If you slow time for yourself, everything happens around you at an advanced pace. You may blow through a boring waiting period or pass forward in time to an anticipated event. If you speed time for yourself, then everything around you appears to happen at a glacial pace. You can walk past an attack, sleep a full eight hours in just a few minutes, or pluck a slow-moving bullet from the air. While you do not leave the plane of reality on which you are, you seem to disappear to onlookers while out of time. Actions that would benefit from slowed or spedup time gain a +2 Enhancement, at Storyguide discretion.

MOONLIT ROOM +

Cost: Spend 1 Legend
Duration: One Scene
Subject: 1 character (either willing, or unconscious)
Range: Short
Action: Simple
You are able to see something no one else is able to see: A knob in the back of everyone’s head. When you turn this knob, you can open the back of their head and enter their mind as a physical space. The room you enter is a metaphorical stand in for their state of mind in the current scene. Physical objects in the room are metaphorically linked to their thoughts, feelings, and memories.

Changes can be made to this psyche by manipulating objects in this room. Once inside, you can perform one of the following actions, however you are not able to directly force any actions.

  • Read a book/video or other media containing their memories, allowing you to ask one question. The answer is limited and biased by their experience and bias. One memory can be removed, but cannot be changed.
  • You can add or remove objects from the room, and there for the psyche, removing or imposing one Mental condition up to +3.
  • You can do damage to the room, inflicting the Aggravated Wound Condition.

At the Storyteller’s discretion, you may encounter dangers and threats lurking within the mind of the person. You count as a possessing spirit for the purposes of other abilities.

ROOM 47 +

Cost: Imbue 1 Legend
Duration: Indefinite
Subject: Self or one character
Action: Simple
When used in conjunction with the Relic “Room 47 Key” you can imbue legend to use the key to open any door. When the door opens, it opens instead into a hotel room that exists outside of town and space. Resembling a normal 1960’s hotel, there is little of interest. Any changes made to the room are reverted to their normal state after leaving. Any objects brought into the room cease to exist. An people in the room when the Key is removed are ejected through one of it’s entrances. The view out the window shades only reveals a blinding whiteness.

While Legend imbued, the holder of this key can etch a rune represented a stylized ‘47’ upon any door. The holder can then use this boon to exit the motel room into one of these marked doors. The wielder of this key can mark as many doors in this fashion as they have dots in the Liminal Calling.

Alice Lockwood – Biography (Before)
Born: Alice Marie Lockwood (née Carney), May 3rd, 1989
Birthplace: Worcester, Massachusetts
Residence: Arlington, MA (Boston Suburbs)
Occupation: Homemaker, PTA Treasurer
Education: Former Astronomy major, Miskatonic University (Incomplete)

Alice Lockwood grew up in a modest two-story home on the quiet edge of Worcester, the kind of neighborhood where everyone knew each other and the streetlights hummed with a comforting regularity. Her parents—Robert and Elaine Carney—were ordinary, decent people who went to church on Sundays and worried about mortgage rates and report cards. Yet, from the age of seven, Alice’s nights were never ordinary.

The dreams began after a bout of high fever. She would wake up unable to move, bathed in a faint silver light, feeling the air hum with something like thought. Shapes with glistening carapaces leaned over her, their voices a dry clicking whisper in her head. They spoke of stars and numbers, of “windows” and “angles.” Her parents took her to doctors; one called it sleep paralysis. Another suggested “night terrors.” Eventually, Alice learned not to tell anyone.

By high school, she’d become fascinated with astronomy—an attempt, perhaps, to give her dreams some rational frame. She found comfort in constellations, in the idea that the universe could be mapped, measured, and explained. That dream led her to Miskatonic University in Arkham, where she enrolled as an astronomy major.

It was there she met Steven Lockwood, a graduate teaching assistant in the Education department. Steven was kind, steady, and endlessly patient—everything Alice wasn’t sure she could ever be. Their first real conversation happened at a university mixer under the planetarium dome, the fake stars casting dim constellations across their faces. He made her laugh. He made her feel normal.
They married two years later.

When she found out she was pregnant with their first child, Jamie, Alice made a decision she’s never fully forgiven herself for—she left her studies “for a little while” to focus on being a mother. A little while became forever. Two sons, a mortgage, and a calendar full of school bake sales later, the cosmos felt impossibly far away. She told herself she didn’t mind. But sometimes, on sleepless nights, she would sit in the backyard, gaze up at the stars, and feel the ache of something lost—something she couldn’t name.

And then, the dreams came back.

It started small—flashes of alien landscapes between sleep and waking, faint whispers in a language that seemed both mathematical and alive. When she looked at the stars, she began to recognize them—not as distant suns, but as doorways. She sometimes woke to find herself standing outside in the yard, barefoot, her skin dusted with frost, her gaze locked on a fixed point in the sky.

She told herself it was stress. Fatigue. A midlife unraveling.

Then, one night, her younger son Isaac began speaking in his sleep—reciting prime numbers backward. The air in the room shimmered like heat over asphalt. Alice reached for him and, for a moment, her hand passed through something—like mist shaped by thought. She saw the shadows of the Mi-go, familiar and terrible, and behind them a vast lattice of impossible light.

And a voice, neither male nor female, spoke within her:

“You are the Key and the Lock, Alice Lockwood. You always have been.”

When she awoke, the frost outside her window had formed a perfect, spiraling sigil across the glass. That was the night Alice Lockwood realized her dreams were not dreams at all.

That was the last night she was truly mortal.
